CIJ welcomes release of API figures

The Centre for Independent Journalism welcomes the Cabinet decision to release the Air Pollution Index figures.

The Centre for Independent Journalism welcomes the Cabinet decision to release the Air Pollution Index figures. The release of this information allows Malaysians to make important decisions about protecting themselves from the worst effects of the haze. It also shows that the Malaysian Government is putting the interests of the general public over misplaced concerns about foreign tourists.

This is an important step forward for transparency and openness in Malaysia, but it needs to be supplemented by legislative reform. Reform would ensure that information that is in the public interest is available to all, not subject to control by politicians or bureacrats. It helps the public hold officials responsible, to make informed decisions about their lives and to assist meaningfully in the fight against corruption.

The Centre for Independent Journalism thus urges the Government to adopt freedom of information legislation. This would not only demonstrate the Government’s commitment to the people, but also help combat corruption and abuse of power at all levels of Government.
